The Muğla province in Turkey is one of the most popular amongst tourists visiting the country, as it is renowned for it's beautiful Mediterranean coastline, idyllic villages and bustling resort towns. The province has a number of large urban areas including Dalaman, Marmaris, Fethiye and Dalyan, and is the closest part of the Turkish mainland to the Greek resort island of Rhodes. Marmaris Castle is well worth a visit - constructed by Ionians but rebuilt by the Ottomans, it has been restored in recent years after it's partial destruction during World War II. The İyilik Kayalıkları Archeological Park is also a popular tourist attraction, with some finds stretching back to the third and fourth centuries BC. Near Fethiye the ancient ruins of the city of Telmessos is consistently crowded with tourists, whilst the Lycian tombs and Kaunos theatre at Dalyan are also busy year-round. The region is connected by the D400 route which, when followed east, takes travellers into Antalya.
The Muğla province is serviced by the Dalaman International Airport, located off of road D555 just to the south of Dalaman. In the summer months when the region is flooded with tourists the airport can be exceptionally busy, and it annually sees over two million passengers through it's doors. BMI, Easy Jet, Monarch Airlines, Cyprus Turkish Airlines, Onur Air, Thomas Cook, Thomson Fly and XL Airways are amongst the airlines that visit the airport. Car hire for holidaying in the region around Dalaman is highly advisable - Budget, Avis and Europcar all have representatives located at the car rental desks in the terminal's arrival hall.
